The secret midlife crisis symptom is giving up on yourself.
Giving up on yourself is the worst symptom of a midlife crisis. No one talks about it, instead, we hear about affairs, hot flashes, new cars, and more. What all of these things have in common is the giving up part. We give up on our marriage, we give up on our self-worth and we give up on our health. People cling to old ideals and realities of what life should look like. It’s time for midlife confidence!
What We Tell Ourselves
My metabolism is slowing so I’ll never lose weight. My worth is wrapped up in the superficial, so I’ll buy a new car. Parenting is difficult so I’ll ignore the problem or avoid my kids. Marriage after decades has gotten too comfortable so I’ll look elsewhere. I’m older now so it’s normal to get sick. My confidence is tied up in the past so why even bother?
Don’t give up! Midlife requires resilience, acceptance, and change. Don’t miss your opportunity to travel, be independent and live a rewarding and enriching life. It’s all connected.
You Deserve Confidence!
You deserve a healthy life. There’s an entire world out there to explore, even in your own backyard. You can run and exercise! My eighty-year-old in-laws still win orienteering competitions and ski several kilometers a day. You deserve a loving relationship, but now that the kids are older, you must rediscover each other. Your body is tired and needs to be loved and nourished. It can’t handle the constant abuse of alcohol, bad nutrition, and lack of sleep or movement. You need to find a way to love yourself as you are today, not as you were yesterday.
We all have our moments, and I certainly do but the key is to never give up. It’s not about symptoms in midlife, it’s about changing the narrative.
Live. It’s never too late. Embrace confidence in your midlife years.
Don’t give up!
