If we’re honest, midlife begins just before forty. How long is the average life expectancy? Are you at that midpoint? It’s impossible to know, but statistics tell us the average person lives into their mid-seventies. In your late thirties, it still feels as if the world is at your feet—your youth lingers on your face, and you may be at the top of your game.
Looking back, I can see how distinctly each decade unfolded, especially my forties and fifties. In my forties, I was still actively parenting, my husband and I socialized most weekends, and our lives were so full that we barely had time for each other. My early fifties felt similar at first, but the kids had become more independent, and my patience for toxic work environments had worn thin. The lure of the big house, big vacations, and big worries had faded too.
Some might call this “slowing down,” but for me, it was exploration. For the first time in years, I intentionally began removing things from my plate; responsibilities, expectations..and replaced them with activities that felt more meaningful. My fifties also brought visible change: fine lines, graying hair, and the undeniable reality of aging. Youth can’t be the most interesting thing about a person. It never was.
I also noticed changes in those around me. Friends fell down rabbit holes of conspiracy theories, unhealed trauma resurfaced, and long-held prejudices came to light. By this age, people begin to take off their masks, and that clarity helps the rest of us protect our peace. Friendships shift. You distance yourself from those who no longer share your core values. (Values, not opinions…they’re very different things.)
In contrast, your forties are about fitting in. You’re still hiding behind the busyness; work, kids, sports, the easy and the superficial. But that all changes in your fifties, when the noise quiets and there’s finally room for truth.
In your forties, you are naive.
In your fifties, you see truths.
