The latest craze in town is pickleball. Currently it’s the fastest growing sport in the United States for all ages. One of our local gyms tore out some of their basketball courts and replaced the space with pickleball courts. These courts are popping up in parks and near community centers throughout the country. But what is Pickleball? Is it the same sport as tennis but smaller? These are the questions I asked myself as I watch some of my friends play and get into the sport.
What is Pickleball?
Think about Pickleball as a game of tennis, badminton and ping pong morphed into one. The game is played with a paddle and has two to four players. The ball is a hollow plastic ball and pickleball can be played on indoor or outdoor courts. According to Forbes, pickleball has been around since the 1960’s but in the past couple of years, participation has increased by over 150%. During the pandemic, many were looking for a social and healthy outdoor activity. This desire for connection could have pushed the reemergence and growth of Pickleball. I recently spoke to a friend of mine who told me that although the sport has smaller courts, experienced tennis players are owning the game. “Even older people who used to play tennis their entire lives are now beating players twenty years younger!”
Social Benefits of Pickleball
I haven’t tried to play yet but it is clear that the social connection it provides is invaluable. Bear with me while I put a midlife slant on this. For years we have all raised our children and have had a certain circle of friends, our village that was there as we raised our families. When the kids got older, some of those connections drifted away. I know so many wonderful and beautiful women looking for new friendships and connection. Pickleball has helped with that, and in some cases has even brought a husband or two into the mix. What is better than finding mutual hobbies and interests with those around us?
Physical Benefits of Pickleball
Exercise and cardiovascular activity is a great benefit of pickleball. Don’t forget hand-eye coordination as well! I’d love to tell you that it’s an easy sport but it depends where you play. Pickleball is a craze with all ages. Numerous colleges have now introduced pickleball teams to their portfolio of activities. If you don’t have a pickleball court near you, some people are using tennis courts but a smaller area of the court. Check out that link for ideas on how to do that!
Mental Health Benefits of Pickleball
Any exercise will release endorphins and pickleball is not any different. If you’re on an outdoor court, the fresh air and simply being outside will also help improve your mood, help with stress and reduce anxiety. If Pickleball is not for you then go for a walk and get those benefits!
What About Pickleball Injuries?
There is risk of injury with almost any sport. I did some research and discovered the the most common injury for Pickleball is a sprained ankle. This is caused by sudden starts and stops or a sudden change in direction. If you are a beginner, working on strength and starting slow is a good idea. I would hazard a guess that just like tennis, tennis elbow would be another common injury. With any sport, it’s important to strengthen your muscles, work on posture and take it slow! Listen to your body. If you often have back or knee pain, it’s important to ice and rest! Overuse and strain will lead to injury so be smart!
How Do You Get Started?
Look for a league! You can find this on a local Facebook group, through meetups and community centers. Some places separate by competitive and recreational players but don’t let this fool you. Look for a league that separates players by skill level! If you’re more cautious like I am, then learn how to play and train first. This link will help you find a trainer to get you ready for the game so you can, try it out! Want to know the official rules? Click here! The USA Pickleball Association also has a link so new players and current players can find more places to play.
Well, that’s what I’ve learned about the Pickleball craze. As for me? I think I’ll start by watching on the Pickleball YouTube channel!
